Is vbdrupal a modified drupal or a module ?
Seems like I have to download a full drupal suite.

vbdrupal is a modified version of drupal.
most of it contains the original drupal files but some parts (mostly user.module, comments.module and database.inc) have been heavily modified

Sounds great...
Since mostly user.module, comments.module and database.inc are modified...
What if I used a virgin drupal install and replaced the original files with the vbdrupal user.module, comments.module and database.inc ?
